Our goal in selecting and performing music is to provide an emotionally moving, spiritually and aesthetically uplifting, and politically motivating experience to our audience. We want to entertain, amuse, and educate; to highlight historical, political, and personal events and experiences common to women; and most of all, to share a sense of community with our audience. Membership is open to all women singers, regardless of musical background. No audition is required. We are a self-directed chorus; we have no paid director. Women who choose to direct Artemis Singers may direct one or many songs, and we may have six or more different directors during the course of any single performance. | Small Difference Women's Choral Ensemble is a small group of women who are dedicated to performing music that has a message. It is one way the members have channelled their activism to change this world for the better. We sing songs for peace & justice, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender equality, women's liberation, the environment, and human rights for all. What makes this group different is its structure. This chorus is smaller, tighter, and more “holistically” run. There is no board, we all make decisions about the group and whenever possible, by consensus. While there is a conductor we are ALL the artistic directors. Our music has a very definite political focus and we are also interested in singing some international music, especially tunes that are significant for women around the world. We took our name from the song “Small Difference” which has been performed by many women's choruses around the world. We are creating a group where everyone is nurtured by everyone else, where we can develop a special connection – spiritual for some, humanistic for all. We are all committed to dealing with any issues that come up between us in a loving, open, and honest way in our best effort to avoid the politics and petty personal issues that so often put a drag on women’s and queer choruses. |
